I went on local news station WATE and spoke about dyslexia, the bridge lighting and why the color red. You can see it here:

The picture we have on our website is of the Henley Street bridge in Knoxville TN. On October 15th, which was Dyslexia Day (1 in 5...October 15th) One of our County Commissioners, Jeff Ownby, asked our City Mayor Madeline Rogero if it could be lit up red for dyslexia awareness day. After a few days of working on this, we got a yes and that is what the picture is. I want to also point out that this was the first time the bridge was ever lit up for a cause.

When I first realized my daughter may have dyslexia I went google crazy. I searched then watched and read everything I could find. I found this video and it was amazing. It explained everything perfectly.
Dyslexia video This is from Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley and it explains what dyslexia is. It isn't just mixing up letters in words, saw and seeing was for example, which is what I thought dyslexia was and many people think dyslexia is. The biggest thing about dyslexia, and probably what makes it the hardest for schools to understand it is that dyslexia is different in everyone that gets diagnosed with it. Dyslexia is a spectrum, one child can have mild dyslexia and another can be severe. The important thing to remember is this, 20%. 1 in 5 students have dyslexia. 1 in 5! That means in the average classroom there are probably 2 or 3 kids in that classroom with dyslexia. This blog will be filled with information on dyslexia. Lots of shared links and even some personal stories. Dr. kelli Sandman Hurley is my hero. She has done a lot for dyslexia and dyslexia awareness. You will see her articles often. Dr. Sally Shaywitz, Dr. Maryanne Wolf, Dr. Tracy Zaretsky more names you will read more about on here. Welcome to The Dyslexia Spot. |
